Birmingham, Ala. (WIAT) — Hurricane Michael left a trail of damage through the American Southeast, but several Central Alabamians are taking it upon themselves to lend a helping hand.
One of those individuals is Justin Rubin, owner of Just-In Time Towing and Recovery in Moody. When disaster strikes, Rubin has made it a habit of pitching in.
“[I assisted with Hurricane] Harvey, we just did Florence last week with the donations we collected from the community,” says Rubin.
With several hurricanes and tornadoes already under his belt, Rubin has loaded his truck bed up with tools and is heading down to assist with the Hurricane Michael recovery effort. He’s then driving back to lead a supply drive.
“Why wouldn’t I [help]? It’s just the right thing to do.”
Rubin says he’s taking a trailer to Florida next Thursday. By then, he hopes to have it filled top to bottom with cleaning supplies.
The Oneonta Fire and Rescue Service made a post on Facebook today saying that they are hosting a supply drive as well.
“I’d say within 30 minutes of it being posted to Facebook, we already had people coming in and dropping off supplies and when we would be here to accept it,” says Josh Gibson with the fire department. He says they are pairing with the Oneonta Police Department for the drive, and will be accepting donations until Monday at 5pm.
“This community around here is great,” added Gibson. “All of Blount County. We always have quite a few people that bring in stuff.”
At this time, both Rubin and Oneonta First Responders say they cannot accept clothes or most food items. Oneonta Fire and Rescue says that the following items are acceptable for donation: bottled water, non-perishable packaged or canned food, juices, snack foods, energy or protein bars, paper plates and plastic utensils, flashlights, batteries, new blankets, first-aid kits, toiletries, baby and adult diapers, toys, books and games for children, pet care items, garbage bags, hand tools, rakes, shovels, rolls of plastic, cleaning supplies.
All donations may be taken to Oneonta Fire and Rescue Service or Just-In Time Towing and Recovery in Moody.
