BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — WIAT CBS 42 unveiled its new state-of-art interactive studio Thursday. Birmingham viewers had their first chance to see the new set during the CBS 42 News at 5 p.m. The new studio’s design offers unlimited flexibility in news storytelling and newscast production, while reflecting the architecture and natural resources of Birmingham and the Central Alabama area.

“This new studio design allows CBS 42 to more effectively showcase the solid local journalism developed every day by our news team, which was recognized recently as the Best Newscast in Alabama by the Alabama Association of Broadcasters.”, said James Cromwell, WIAT CBS 42’s Vice President and General Manager. “This significant investment by our parent company, Nexstar Media Group, is another example of our commitment to the state of Alabama. With news bureaus in Montgomery and Washington, D.C, and our sister Nexstar stations in Mobile, Huntsville, Dothan, and Auburn/Columbus, our home in Birmingham places CBS 42 at the center of our company’s presence in Alabama. This new studio will serve as the anchor of our local content, across broadcast and digital platforms, and will serve our neighbors in Central Alabama for many years to come”, Cromwell added.

“This new set creates a more dynamic environment that allows our journalists more options in telling their stories. Our redesigned Storm Team Weather Center also allows our meteorologists to deliver critical weather information to viewers with even more clarity,” said News Director Rob Martin. “I truly believe this set’s unique features take our news product to the next level of excellence.”

The studio includes the latest in LED lighting and multiple monitor technology, along with unique structural design features, all contributing to the new look.

“I designed this set to be versatile enough that even when a single piece is moved it can give the viewer a whole different look. Also, placement of the technology will help deliver a more vibrant interactive broadcast,” said Set Designer Lance Schroeder.
