BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A local non-profit has launched a new campaign to give the homeless a fresh, clean start.

Be A Blessing Birmingham is spreading the word about the power of a shower.

“You get that confidence of being clean,” said Erica Robbins, founder of Be A Blessing Birmingham. “It leads to self-confidence it leads to a higher self-esteem that allows you to then you know feel like ok now I can go and apply for this job”.

The non-profit organization is trying to raise $60,000 needed for the mobile showers and a truck to pull the trailer.

“I had so many people asking me, is there any place that we can clean up and my answer was no because we don’t have those kinds of facilities here in the city of Birmingham,” said Robbins.

Be A Blessing Birmingham helps the homeless community year round, whether that’s handing out toiletry kits, providing resources or food.

Erica Robbins is the founder of the group, she tells CBS42 many homeless people go days and weeks without the ability to get clean.

“We offer certain hygiene products, baby wipes and things like that that they use to try to clean up but most people will go on the side of the building if there’s a water hose or something and they’re out in the open and out in public,” said Robbins.

Cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Colorado Springs and Charlotte already offering a similar service.
