MCCALLA, Ala. (WIAT) — A new union agreement could mean hundreds of laid-off workers from the Brookwood Mines will soon be able to get back to work.
Members of the United Mine Workers of America began voting on a new contract at 6 a.m. Tuesday. The results of that vote came down just before 8 p.m. the same day.
The agreement with Coal Acquisition, Inc. was approved by more than 70 percent of union members.
It will provide continued employment for hundreds of miners in the Brookwood area, as well as the potential for around a hundred more workers to be called back on the job in the coming weeks.
