BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE: The victim has been identified as 63-year-old Harold J.Higginbotham. He was pronounced dead around 8:35 a.m. According to the Jefferson County Coroner, Higginbotham was walking down the tracks away from the train.
About half a mile out, the train conductor noticed him and tried to stop, even blowing the train horn to get Higginbotham out of the way. Higginbotham did not move. He turned sideways, took a step back, but was struck by the train.
Law officials are investigating a body that was found near train tracks Tuesday morning.
According to Captain Carillo, the person was found dead by railroad tracks at Floyd Bradford Road and Woodland Industrial Drive.
Both Birmingham and Irondale Police are on the scene.
The cause of death has not been determined at this time.
