Birmingham police search for suspect who shot at officer

BIrmingham, AL (WIAT) -- Police are in search of a suspect who shot at an officer early sunday morning.

At approximately 3:30 am, an off duty BPD officer reported shots fired in the area of the 400 block of 9th Street West. Officers from the West precinct responded to the area and encountered a suspect leaving the area at a high rate of speed.


The responding officers observed the suspects car stop in the 500 block of 9th Street West and the suspect exited his vehicle with a rifle. The suspect began to fire at officers and one of the officers managed to return gunfire before the suspect managed to flee the scene.  

There is gunfire damage to two patrol cars but no injuries to officers. We later learned that a victim had sustained injuries in the 400 block of 9th Street West. That victim was transported to the hospital for treatment. That victim is reported to be in stable condition.

No suspect in custody at this time.
