UPDATE 7:46 p.m. - Birmingham Police have identified the victim in the homicide investigation off of Elton B. Stephens Expressway today. 18-year-old Herman Gordon, Jr., was driving down the expressway when his vehicle was shot into multiple times by another vehicle.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - Birmingham Police reported the Elton B. Stephens Expressway was closed due to a homicide investigation.
Around 2:15 p.m., officers responded to a person shot at 1st Avenue North and Carraway Blvd. Upon arrival, police found a male, possibly in late teens or early 20s dead in a silver sedan.
Investigators think the shooting took place on the expressway. Police say the shooting occurred as surrounding cars were also driving on the roadway. The victim exited the freeway after being shot and his car came to a rest at the intersection. Only the victim's vehicle was struck, according to Sgt. Bryan Shelton.
Police do not believe this incident to be random and do not suspect that it was a road rage event.
At this time, there is no suspect car information and do not consider this shooting to be connected to any other shootings, according to police.
The expressway is back open following the shooting.
