Bingo operations receive cease and desist order in Brighton

Local News

BRIGHTON, Ala (WIAT) –  The Jefferson County District Attorney’ Office in the Bessemer division is cracking down on illegal gambling operations.

Jefferson County (Bessemer) District Attorney, Lynneice Washington served cease and desist orders to Super Highway Bingo off Bessemer Super Highway and Fun-N-Games Arcade off Jaybird Road. Washington says the electronic bingo halls are operating illegally according to the Bingo Act of 1980 for Jefferson County.

“It’s not about whether you personally favor bingo or not, it’s all about the law,” said Washington, “I swore and I took an oath to upload the law and I plan to do just that.”

Washington believes people are opening bingo operations in hopes of the Alabama Legislature passing a state lottery bill. Washington says even if that happens it does not make bingo operations legal.

“Lottery and Bingo are two different gaming activities,” said Washington, “I’m thinking they’re just trying to get ahead.”

Washington says she is concerned about the safety of the community when alcohol and gambling are involved at an illegal establishment. Washington says it is now up to the City of Brighton to shut down the bingo operations.

CBS 42 reached out to Brighton Mayor, Eddie Cooper about the matter. Cooper says he is not able to comment at this time. CBS 42 also reached out to management at Super Highway Bingo and Fun-N-Games Arcade, and both operations declined to comment.
