Are you falling in love... or for a scam?

Officials warn against romance scams

U.S. (WIAT) --  Valentine's Day is tomorrow and if you are thinking about going online to find a date, then beware. The Federal Trade Commission is warning romance scams are rising.

Fraudsters often find their victims through a dating site or app. They also find victims through social media, officials say.

A report released more than 21,000 people reported falling for theses scams last year. They lost a total of $143 million.

CBS News Contributor and wired editor-in-chief Nicholas Thompson has some advice on how to make sure you are talking to the right person.

"You look for clues in the conversation," Thompson said. "You see, does it actually seem like they are a real person? Does it seem like the person they say they are? If they ask you a question do they give you a response that seems genuine?"
