Anniston sites considered for national monument designation

ANNISTON, Ala. (WIAT) — Federal officials met with the public Thursday in Anniston to hear from the them about the possibility of designating a national monument in the city.

Two sites are being considered. One is the former Greyhound bus terminal on Gurnee Avenue. The other is the site off Alabama Hwy 202 where a mob of Ku Klux Klan members firebombed a bus.

Freedom Rider Hank Thomas was on that bus. He says he would be excited to see Anniston finally receive the national recognition it deserves.

“When I say that Anniston has come a long way, it has indeed come a long way … Building the civil rights site is another exclamation point on the history — the modern day history – of Anniston,” said Thomas.

The sites in Anniston are just two of several sites in central Alabama being considered for the national monument designation.
