Alumni remember old Ensley magnet high school that caught fire

ENSLEY, Ala. (WIAT) -- Birmingham Fire and Rescue are working to determine what caused the old Ensley Magnet High School on Avenue J to catch fire early Tuesday morning. Click here for original story. Alumni from several different classes gathered at the scene today as firefighters continued putting out hot spots.

Investigators say lightning may have sparked the fire.

Karla Page is a graduate from the school. She says it was already upsetting the school had been vacant for so long. She says she hopes the building can be salvaged and re-purposed.

"I just hope and pray that nobody intentionally set this building on fire. I don't even want to think about that." said Page.

Many of the alumni say the building is much more than an old school. They say many of the families in Ensley are there today because of relationships formed at the high school. The last class to graduate from the school was in 2006.

A memorial service is planned to take place at the school Saturday, Juky 21st at Noon. All alumni are encouraged to attend.
