SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) -
With a new school year starting next month, shoppers across our area are taking advantage of the sales tax holiday this weekend.
Ashley Savage has four boys to shop for, and she said the tax free weekend is a big money saver.
“The saving is huge. I can probably get an extra pair of shoes today.” said Savage.
She's a veteran shopper of the tax holiday, but she says if you want to take advantage of any sales on top of the tax free weekend, you'd better get an early start.
“Normally we try to get out every year but most of the stuff is already gone, like first come first serve, so most of its gone," said Savage.
Angie Douglas was out shopping with her daughter. She said it's their first time shopping the tax holiday, but she's finding it's a great way to get more bang for your buck.
“In the past we've kind of thought about it but never really taken advantage, so this year we thought we'd jump on that opportunity," said Douglas.
The Alabama Department of Revenue says the tax break is there to give shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers and clothing for a little less than they would normally pay. However, not everything is tax-free. You can save on clothing, but accessories like handbags, jewelry and sunglasses are still taxable.
“We're just trying to get back-to-school deals and finish up school supplies, things like that," said Douglas.
“Hopefully we find some good deals,” said Savage.
The Sales Tax Holiday ends Monday morning at midnight.
