TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — Dozens of Alabama football fans greeted the team as they arrived back on campus Tuesday morning.
The Alabama Crimson Tide football team landed at the airport in Tuscaloosa, then boarded buses and arrived at the Mal Moore athletic facility at 10:30 a.m. Abby Simpson was one of the dozens of fans who waited to see the team, despite the rain and cold temperatures.
“It’s just exciting and we’ve never been in a position to come greet them; we are always out of town,” Simpson said. “So, I got up early this morning to see if they were coming. I said, ‘come on ya’ll, let’s go!'”
Kaci Crumpton is another die hard Alabama fan who said being on campus Tuesday morning was the place she and her family had to be to welcome home the champions.
“It proves that no doubt, we are the national champions. We’ve had some tough games this year but we came back and proved ourselves last night,” Crumpton said. “So it means a lot.”
Many Alabama players stopped to talk and sign autographs as they walked down the path where dozens lined up to see the team.
Rian Ellis and her family tailgated in Atlanta for the championship game. She says it was a tiring trip, but worth it to get to watch Alabama defeat Georgia.
“We are so tired and exhausted, but it’s super special and honestly, this is the best thing ever to happen to Alabama and it’s going to continue,” Ellis said. “And we are going to number 18 next year.”
By winning the championship, Nick Saban ties legendary coach Bear Bryant with six national championship titles. Alabama has won seventeen championships.
