BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Adelante Alabama Worker Center is demanding the release of their board member Marcos Baltazar and his son, Juan Baltazar, from ICE custody.

Last Thursday, Marcos Baltazar and his son Juan were detained during a routine ICE check-in in Homewood and transported to the ICE detention facility in Gadsden.

The Adelante organization gathered community members in Birmingham Tuesday to call for the release of Marco and Juan.

Marco Baltazar’s brother spoke during the press conference explaining the impact of Marco’s contributions to the community and how he and his son being detained sends a bad message for Birmingham.

Adelante workers say during the press conference the two men received ” cruel and unnecessary detention.”

Marco and his son Juan moved to the U.S. 3 years ago when his wife and two twin sons, died in Guatemala.

The Adelante group unites day laborers, domestic workers and works to defend their dignity and pursue justice.
