BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Nearly three months after his spinal cord injury, Ben Abercrombie still can’t move his arms or legs. But the former Hoover football player and his family remain hopeful about his recovery.
Ben Abercrombie was injured during a Harvard football game Sept. 16. He’s currently recovering at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. His father spoke to CBS 42 about Ben’s recovery, and praised his son’s positive attitude.
“Ben continues to work hard,” Marty Abercrombie said. “He’s got just an outstanding frame of mind and approach, he’s so positive. And his positive outlook keeps us – myself and my wife Sherri – upbeat.”
Marty Abercrombie said his son has been able to eat more lately, and that’s helped him gain strength. Doctors also have put him through muscle stimulation, which they hope will reinstate the signals going through his spinal cord. They haven’t seen any progress on that yet, but Ben’s spinal cord is intact, so it’s possible that Ben can recover.
Throughout his recovery, Ben has received support from people across Alabama and beyond. Former teammates from Hoover and Harvard have visited along with other friends. Georgia football coach Kirby Smart stopped by and the Alabama football team sent a video. The support has been an inspiration to the Abercrombie family.
“It reassures you that the human spirit is still alive,” Marty Abercrombie said. “So many crazy things happen in this world, but then you see the response that our community and the state of Alabama has had to Ben’s situation. It just gives you faith in mankind.”
The support continues this week with a fundraiser at Wing Zone. Marty Abercrombie owns the Wing Zone in Hoover, so the company wanted to do something to help. On Wednesday, they’ll give away five free boneless wings of its new Korean Q flavor. For every five they give away, they’ll donate one dollar to the Ben Abercrombie fund to support the family.
“It’s just wonderful that Wing Zone’s supporting us, supporting Ben in this way,” Marty Abercrombie said. “It’s again, just another amazing thing that’s being done for Ben and our family, so we do appreciate the Wing Zone family stepping up and helping us.”
All U.S. Wing Zone locations are participating in the fundraiser.
