HAMILTON, Ala. (WIAT) — Three people are dead after a small plane bound for Hamilton, Alabama crashed in Mississippi over the weekend.
Federal investigators are on the scene of the crash near County Road 120 in Union County, Mississippi. The plane was on the way to Hamilton, Alabama from Oxford, Mississippi, according to Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards.
According to Edwards, the victims have been identified as Tommy and Merline Nix from Belmont, Mississippi and Jarrod Holloway from Booneville, Mississippi.
While Edwards identified the Nix family as being from Mississippi, CBS 42 has learned they also have ties to Guin, Alabama.
Edwards told CBS 42 that deputies received a call about from air traffic control in Memphis late Saturday afternoon about a plane that had gone off the radar in the southeast part of the county.
Deputies searched through bad weather and later located debris after a volunteer firefighter smelled fuel.
A tornado warning hampered recovery efforts Saturday, but crews were able to return early Sunday.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
