BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Two people were killed after a head-on collision Saturday morning.

Around 4 a.m., an off-duty police officer witnessed a driver turn from Finley Boulevard onto Carraway Boulevard/Highway 31. At that point, the driver began traveling southbound in the northbound lane.

The police officer attempted to get the driver’s attention to make her aware that she was driving on the wrong side of the road by flashing his lights and honking his horn, according to Sgt. Johnny Williams of Birmingham Police.

However, the driver continued driving on the wrong side until her vehicle collided with another man’s vehicle collided at Carraway Boulevard and 19th Avenue North, police report.

The man involved in the accident was pronounced dead at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue, according to authorities. The woman was taken to UAB Hospital where she later died.

The two drivers killed in the accident were the only passengers in their vehicles and the off-duty officer is the only known witness so far in the investigation, police say.
