HOOVER, Ala (WIAT) — Hoover Police were called to the Costco parking lot on Sunday after two dogs were left in a hot car with the windows up.

According to police, customers saw the dogs and called police around 2:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they noticed that the doors to the vehicle were unlocked and let the dogs out.

The two dogs were a golden retriever and a small puppy. Customers and officers dumped water on the dogs to cool them down after they exited the car.

Shortly after, officials said the owner came out and claimed he forgot his animals were in the car. Police are not releasing the owner’s name but did say he is an adult man from Pelham.

The dogs were taken to Vestavia Animal Clinic where they both survived. Dr. Brad Murphy of Vestavia Animal Clinic said the dogs had a temperature of 106, which is very dangerous.

“The longer they’re at higher temperature, the more damage can be done. So, our goal when they first come in is to get that temperature down as quickly as possible,” Dr. Brad Murphy. “Ice baths, ice packs, wetting the pads down with alcohol to encourage evaporation – those things help decrease temperature.”

The owner was given a citation, but police tell CBS 42 more charges may be filed.
