BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Birmingham 18-year-old is recovering from a shooting that took place Sunday evening at a Dollar General in North Birmingham.
The victim has been identified as Maalik Camp. CBS 42’s Malique Rankin sat down with Camp’s mother, Judith.
She says Maalik had been working at the dollar general for about seven months. This fall, he had plans to attend Alabama State University with a major in Music and Communications. He had scholarships to cover his tuition costs.
Instead, Maalik will spend the next few months recovering from a gunshot wound. On Sunday, the young man was sent to UAB hospital with life-threatening injuries following an attempted robbery.
“Since everything is on pause, I’m not even worried about that right now. I’m just worried about him. Healing. Everything is taken care of.”Judith Camp
Maalik’s mother tells us he wasn’t originally supposed to work at the Dollar General on Sunday, but picked up an extra shift.
“He just kept telling me, “mom I wasn’t supposed to be there, I wasn’t supposed to be at work,'” says Judith
The bullet injured Maalik’s small and large intestine, his bowel, and caused him to lose a kidney. He is currently using a feeding tube.
The family has a GoFundMe account set up to help cover costs during this difficult time. That page can be found here.
His mother says she has nothing to say to the man that hurt her son.
“I have no words. I have no words. I have none.”Judith Camp
On Monday, Birmingham Police released surveillance photos of the suspected robber. They’re asking for the public’s help in finding him. If anyone has information on the identity of the robber, they’re asked to call crime stoppers at (205) 254-7777.
