BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — An 18-year-old is dead after a shooting near Wenonah High School Wednesday night.

Birmingham Police said in a press briefing that De’undray Haggard, 18, was fatally shot at Kimbrough Homes near Wenonah High School in the 2800 block of John Bryan Road Southwest around 8 p.m. Haggard was a senior at A.H. Parker High School.

Officers who patrol the housing community responded to a call of shots fired, according to Sgt. Rodarius Mauldin with the Birmingham Police Department. When they arrived on scene, officers found Haggard suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

In a press release provided Thursday morning, Birmingham Police said Haggard met the shooter at the location. During their interaction the suspect shot Haggard multiple times before running from the scene. The suspect remains at-large at this time.

“As we experience gun violence in the city and surrounding areas, the message would be conflict resolution, community engagement,” said Sgt. Mauldin. “We need all our various partners to chip in. It starts with family raising their children the right way.”

Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan released the following statement on Haggard’s death:

“Once again, we have lost a Birmingham City Schools student to gun violence, and we are deeply saddened. De’Undray Haggard, a 12th-grade student at A.H. Parker High School, was shot and killed Wednesday night in southwest Birmingham. Our thoughts and prayers are with De’Undray’s family as well as the Parker High School family. Grief counselors are at Parker today to support the students, faculty and staff.”
