BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A woman was transported to the hospital Monday morning after sustaining minor injuries from an apartment fire off of Rugby Avenue and Oporto Madrid Boulevard.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the call early this morning and was able to contain the flames in 15 minutes.

According to Birmingham Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Tom White, the call came in around 3:50 a.m. All of the residents were able to get out of the building safely, although one woman suffered from a minor injury.

The apartment sustained significant fire damage on the top floor with water damage on the bottom floor. Birmingham Fire and Rescue worked to limit the damage done to the building.

“We’re doing salvage and overhaul right now,” White told CBS 42. “We’re trying to salvage everything that we can, get everything in the center of the apartment, put a tarp over it so water won’t get on it, trying to protect what they’ve got left.”

Birmingham Fire and Rescue later cleared the scene.
