BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE (6 a.m.) The following was released by the Birmingham Police Department:
Birmingham Police Department reports that detectives are conducting a robbery and traffic fatality investigation.
Officers from the North Precinct responded to the 1000 block of Third Avenue North to investigate a report of a robbery and vehicle accident. Upon arrival, officers received information on an accident involving a motorcycle and Camaro.
Officers also learned that the driver of the Camaro was assaulted by unknown suspects traveling in a second vehicle at the scene. After assaulting the driver of the Camaro, the suspects left the scene in the Camaro followed by the suspect’s vehicle. As the victim lied in the roadway, he was struck by a vehicle driven by an off duty BPD officer.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue reported to the scene and pronounced the victim deceased on the scene. The driver of the motorcycle was transported to UAB Hospital for treatment. There was no injury to the off duty officer.
The victim’s identity will be released upon confirmation and notification of immediate family.
The Camaro was later located in the 300 block of 66th Street in Fairfield.

(5:30 a.m.): According to Sgt. Williams of the Birmingham Police Department, a motorcycle and a Chevrolet Camaro collided. The accident happened at Third Avenue North and 11th Street just before 4 a.m.
During that accident, another party drove up, beat up the driver of the Chevrolet Camaro and took the vehicle from them.
Another person, an off-duty Birmingham Police Department officer, happened to have passed through the area shortly after the accident and vehicular theft and accidentally ran over the driver of the Camaro.
The stolen Camaro was later found in Fairfield burned.

Birmingham police are investigating a deadly accident that appears to involve a motorcycle.
It happened early Wednesday morning at the corner of 11th St N and Third Ave N in Downtown Birmingham.
