LEEDS, Ala. (WIAT) – The Leeds Police Department is adding a SWAT team to its ranks.
Leeds Police Chief Jim Atkinson said the department is taking necessary measures to improve safety as the city experiences major economic growth. Atkinson says a SWAT team is necessary in light of recent mass shootings nationwide and threats to public safety.
Leeds PD plans to add 10 trained volunteer officers, including a sniper, to the team.
“We want to get ahead of the game and be proactive for our citizens. And right now we have to,” Atkinson said. “If a situation arises, we have to depend on other cities. If a situation arises, we would like to be here first.”
Atkinson says the qualified officers have already signed up and will undergo SWAT team training over the next several weeks. Atkinson hopes the SWAT team will officially be in place following that training.
