According to the National Day Calendar, the tradition of participating in National Doughnut/Donut day dates back to World War I. The day celebrates the doughnut and honors Salvation Army Lassies who were the women that served doughnuts to soldiers during the war.
It was in 1917 that the original “Salvation Army Doughnut” was first served by women in the Salvation Army. The lassies would go to the front lines of Europe to serve doughnuts during World War II.
