BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A homicide investigation is underway after a teen was shot and killed on the interstate Wednesday night.
According to Officer Truman Fitzgerald with the Birmingham Police Department, the interstate shooting began around 6 p.m. Responding officers found the teen had been shot multiple times near the Liberty Parkway exit at Overton Road.
“Witnesses observed a vehicle, a sedan, pull off the interstate. Shots were fired. They then observed a male exit the vehicle wounded by gunfire he collapsed in the roadway before Vestavia fire and rescue transported him,” Fitzgerald said.
The Vestavia Fire and Rescue Service arrived and transported the victim to the hospital where he later died.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office later identified the teen as 16-year-old Jamie Monte Gibson.
“We are saddened by the tragic loss of Jamie Monte Gibson, a 16-year-old Huffman High School sophomore,” said Sherrel Wheeler Stewart, spokesperson for Birmingham City Schools. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Jamie’s family as well as the Huffman High School family. Additional counselors will be at Huffman today for the students and staff.”
