ETOWAH COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — An Etowah County man is charged with murder in the shooting death of a plumber over the weekend.
According to the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office, 49-year-old Douglas Dewayne Sparks was killed while doing repairs at a home off U.S. Highway 411.
Orva Kyle McDonald Jr., 61, is in the Etowah County Detention Center charged with murder. He has a $1 million cash bond, according to court documents.
According to investigators, McDonald did not deny involvement in the shooting during his interviews with investigators but told deputies he does not remember what happened leading up to the shots being fired.
Deputies said Sparks and McDonald met about a week ago when Sparks came to repair a clogged drain. Sparks worked for a plumbing company based out of Oxford.
Investigators said the homeowners decided to replace the plumbing and contracted the services of the company Sparks worked for.
Sparks was in the process of completing the job Saturday when he was killed around 7:20 p.m. Investigators said he had been there since earlier in the day.
According to Etowah County Sheriff’s Office investigator Will Farley, McDonald’s wife said she was on the porch and heard the gunshots.
The family had even prepared a sandwich for Sparks before he was killed, according to Farley.
Sparks was found lying dead in the side yard of the residence.
According to Farley, the suspect has not denied involvement during his interviews with law enforcement and has since retained an attorney.
The name of the attorney was not immediately available.
Under conditions set by a judge, McDonald must undergo a mental health evaluation before release if he is able to post the cash bond of $1 million.
Etowah County deputies continue to investigate the case.
