BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — On Wednesday, the University of Alabama Birmingham held a Q&A to discuss everything they are doing to stay ahead of the pandemic.

Dr. Rachael Lee, UAB Hospital’s epidemiologist and assistant professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, provided an update on the latest COVID care taking place at UAB hospital and take general questions.

UAB is currently caring for 38 patients who have tested positive for the virus. Most of which are believed to be the Delta variant. Dr. Lee says a majority of the patients are unvaccinated and a significant amount are younger people.

Dr. Lee did say that Alabama may be at risk of having another outbreak, calling the potential situation a “wildfire.”

Despite the recent rise in cases and low vaccination rate, Dr. Lee says that UAB does not plan on changing its visitation policies for patients and their families at this time.

Dr. Lee also encouraged Alabamians to get vaccinated for the virus and for those who decide not to, to follow CDC guidelines.
