GREENSBORO, Ala. (WIAT) — Officials in West Alabama were preparing for severe weather Thursday.
The Hale County EMA office has a mobile hospital trailer they can use to treat storm victims if they have to respond to disasters.
EMA director Russell Weeden calls the trailer the Emergency Services Unit. It is a hospital
on wheels. It has 10 patient treatment beds inside, it also has two ATV four wheelers, oxygen, various
medical supplies and other life-saving equipment.
“Just know that if there is a medical emergency like a large disaster or what not. Hale County is
prepared and Hale county is going to be there for you. We are going to bring all of our assets to where
the emergency or disaster is to be able to set up on the scene to during medical triage” Weeden said.
Weeden says during the April 27, 2011 tornado outbreak, the EMA used the mobile trailer in Sawyerville where a tornado touched down. Several people were injured and treated inside the emergency services unit.
“When the tornado touched down in Sawyerville we were able to take it to the Sawyerville grocery store
and set up there. We had ten patients in it at a time and we were able to triage the worst ones and
send them over to the hospital”.
Weeden says Hale County is the only agency in the State of Alabama that has a mobile hospital.
“We use it a lot not just for our hospital but also for our instant command. We use it on lost hunters, large forest fires. We actually take it out a lot and not just for the mobile hospital but for other uses”.
The Hale County EMA has been using it since 2008.
