According to Northport Fire and Rescue, a fuel tanker truck carrying a mixture of gasoline and diesel fuel overturned on Alabama Highway 171 at the 5 mile marker around 10:00 a.m. The tanker began leaking the fuel, prompting an evacuation of the immediate area. The tanker overturned after an accident involving an SUV.

The driver of the tanker truck was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the SUV was uninjured.

Authorities estimated several hundred gallons of fuel were spilled, but they were able to contain the spill and slow the leak.

The fuel was off-loaded into another tanker, and the roadway reopened several hours later.
