Fatal shooting under investigation on 10th Avenue in Wylam, victim identified

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE (9 a.m.): The following has been released by the Birmingham Police Department: Officers from the west precinct responded to the 1000 block of Gulfport Street in Wylam to investigate a shot spotter call. When officers responded, they received additional calls from citizens in the area that shots were fired.

Upon arrival, they found a person lying on the edge of the roadway unresponsive and suffering a gunshot wound. The victim has been identified as 18-year-old Calvin Deonte Vance of Birmingham, Alabama.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived along with the Jefferson County Coroner and pronounced Vance deceased on the scene.

At 8:50 p.m. police arrived at the scene of 10th Avenue and Gulfport Street and found a person unresponsive lying in the street, suffering from a gunshot wound. The person was pronounced dead on the scene.

There is no suspect in custody and a no motive available at this time.
