Fairfield public library expected to close due to lack of funding

News

FAIRFIELD, Ala. (WIAT) — The library is scheduled to close in Fairfield. Mayor Eddie Penny confirms the library is set to close on October 1. Penny says it could stay open if funding becomes available– but the city has to allocate the money they receive in other areas first.

Mayor Penny said, “The council just passed a bill which included approval funds for the library pending availability of funds. We have to prioritize what we pay based on the funds that’s available. We start with the first responders and make sure we have police and fire protection and then we spread it out through the other agencies.”

Penny also says council members would like to see the library stay open but they can’t give the facility funding they don’t have.
