Explosives found in vehicle during traffic stop


BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — According to Birmingham Police, multiple weapons and explosives were found in a vehicle stopped on 50th St. N and 1st Ave N.

Officers from the East Precinct stopped a 2008 Dodge Ram pickup for failure to turn on headlights around 1 a.m.

Officers noticed a riffle lying on the back seat of the truck. The driver of the vehicle said he had another weapon in the car. Both weapons were recovered by police.

Upon further inspection, police discovered two additional weapons and explosive devices in the bed of the truck. Sgt. Hayes says the explosives appeared to be home made with no intention to use.

Officers secured the perimeter and notified bomb technicians. The devices were transported to another location for further examination.

The two occupants of the vehicle were both arrested. The driver was charged with violation of state firearms act. The passenger was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Charges regarding the devices are still pending.

There are currently no ties to terrorism.
