BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham City Schools released the district’s student assessment results during a press conference Monday afternoon.

The State Department of Education administered the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program back in the spring to determine student’s understanding of core subjects such as math and English.

BCS Superintendent Mark Sullivan addressed the results and also provided details on the district’s plans to improve student achievement.

The district saw an increase in the comprehension scores in language arts but a significant decrease in math scores. Sullivan says the COVID-19 pandemic played a role in the numbers.

“This is what learning loss looks like,” he said.

Letters will be sent out to parents of students that will outline their individual scores from ACAP.
