Dog dies after neighbor accused of striking it against a truck by the neck

IRONDALE, Ala. (WIAT) — A 34-year-old man was arrested after police say he threatened to burn his neighbor’s house down, broke in, and stole and slung her Rat Terrier by the neck into his pickup truck.

David Paul Bearden is charged with cruelty to animals, making a terrorist threat, and burglary in the second.

According to Irondale Police Det. Mangina, the incident happened last weekend when Bearden allegedly broke into the woman’s home. She wasn’t there, but her elderly mother who is sick was in bed, and didn’t hear him enter.

An eyewitness to the crime told investigators that Bearden picked up the dog and swung it unto the back of a pickup truck. The witness told him to give the dog back, which he eventually did.

The homeowner found the dog dead on the front porch when she returned. Mangina says a vet determined the dog suffered head and neck trauma, and judging by the injuries, it was repeatedly struck.

Bearden is in the Jefferson County Jail, with bond set at $32,500.
