BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WIAT) — UPDATE: According to Lt. Sean Edwards of the Birmingham Police Department, no charges will be brought against the driver in this case.
ORIGINAL: The family and friends of a 3-year-old Malik Carpenter are remembering a smart little boy who loved to smile. He was killed last night after being hit by a vehicle on Northland Avenue Southwest in Birmingham.
Birmingham police say the child was hit by a vehicle around 7:20 p.m. on Monday. Investigators say that vehicle then drove away from the scene, but the driver of the vehicle finally contacted the police and is cooperating with the investigation.
A small memorial is growing on the street where he was killed. Family and neighbors gathered to console each other as cars lined up throughout the neighborhood. Tuesday afternoon, family members are trying to cope with the sudden loss.
