Today: Alabama legislature gives update on addressing troubled Alabama prison system

Crime

(WIAT) — The Alabama Department of Corrections officials have until next week to decide what to do about the state’s troubled prison system.  The justice department demanded an overhaul after an investigation found conditions “unconstitutional,” violating the eight amendment protections against cruel and unusual punishment.

Alabama prisons have the highest suicide rate in the country, 15 in 15 months,  and according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, even inmates on suicide watch are held in solitary confinement.

Maria Morris of the Southern Poverty Law Center said, “Things are really out of control and need to be reined in. They’re sticking them into segregation units and letting them suffer.”

Today, Alabama’s legislative leadership is set to give an update on legislative action based on the recommendations of the department of justice.
