Suspect in Ohio high school shooting identified, charges released

MADISON TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) — The Butler County Sheriff identified the shooter as 14-year-old James Austin Hancock.

Sheriff Jones told the media Monday afternoon the teen suspected in the shooting at Madison Jr./Sr/ High School has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, making terrorist threats, inducing panic, and felonious assault.

Two 14-year-old victims who were flown to Miami Valley Hospital are expected to make a full recovery from their gunshot wounds, Dr. Peter Ekeh, with the hospital said Monday afternoon.

Cameron Smith and Cooper Caffrey, the shooting victims, were both flown to the hospital via CareFlight. The two were awake and alert upon their arrival to the hospital.

One victim was shot multiple times, but is expected to make a full recovery. There is a possibility that one of the victims will need surgery.

The shooting happened at a Butler County high school late Monday morning. A mother of a student told our parters at WLWT that an eighth grader brought the gun to school.

The Butler County Sheriff, Richard Jones met with reporters Monday afternoon and said they have an idea of a motive but he did not share that with the media.

Two other students were injured by shrapnel in the incident. They are 14-year-old Brant Murray and 14-year-old Katherine Doucette. Sheriff Jones said all families have been notified of their students’ involvement, and doctors are working to keep the families updated with their children’s conditions.

Sheriff Jones said the suspect is a 14-year-old student. He was taken into custody outside the school just minutes after the shooting. Jones says the suspect threw his weapon on the ground in or around the school. He is being questioned by investigators.

The two 14-year-old boys were evaluated at Miami Valley Hospital by the hospital’s trauma team in Dayton. They are reportedly in stable condition. It is unknown if they were the victims who were shot.
