Suspect in Mississippi officer’s murder arrested


BILOXI, Miss. (WIAT) — The suspect in a Biloxi Police officer’s Sunday night slaying was taken into custody Monday night after a day-long manhunt, Mississippi police officials confirm. 

Police officers identified the apprehended suspect as 19-year-old Darian Tawan Atkinson.

He’s accused of fatally shooting 24-year veteran Biloxi Police Officer Robert McKeithen, who was expected to retire at the end of the year.

The city’s police chief says the shooting happened about 10:30 p.m. Sunday night outside of the main headquarters for the Biloxi Police Department. Investigators say Atkinson approached the officer while he was on duty, shot him multiple times, and ran from the scene.

Police and SWAT officials searched for the suspect until his arrest in Wiggins, Mississippi.
