Suspect dead after shoot out, chase with police in Blount County


BLOUNT COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE: The Blount County Coroner has identified the suspect as 38 year old Daniel Eric Blackmon.

Three people are injured and a suspect is dead after authorities say a person started shooting in the Highway 79 and 278 intersection Tuesday morning.

Beginning at about 7 a.m., Blount County Dispatch received a call about a person firing shots in the intersection of Highway 79 and 278.

Three people were injured at this scene, two of which were transported to the hospital to be treated for their injuries. The suspect was also said to have shot up multiple homes near the area of Rocky Hollow Road.

The suspect left the scene and proceeded into Marshall County, where he was spotted by law enforcement and a chase ensued. According to the Blount County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect shot at a concrete truck in Marshall County.

The pursuit began on U.S. 231 and as the suspect was pursued, he began firing at law enforcement, later crashing his vehicle.

When the suspect crashed, law enforcement exited their vehicles, and the suspect began firing shots at law enforcement. Law enforcement returned fire out of self-defense, and the suspect was killed on the scene.

The investigation is ongoing. The FBI is assisting multiple law enforcement agencies in this investigation.
