Suspect charged in connection to traffic accident that led to death of Camaro driver

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham Police report that detectives have arrested and charged a suspect in connection to a robbery at a traffic fatality investigation. The incident occurred earlier in June (See related.)

The suspect has been identified as 32-year-old Keyton Nicole Sparks of Fairfield, Ala. Warrants for robbery and murder have been obtained against this suspect.

According to Birmingham Police, the suspect was charged with murder due to the vicious assault that left him physically unable to retreat from the roadway before he was struck by the vehicle.

The following was from the Birmingham Police Department:

Officers from the North Precinct responded to the 1000 block of 3rd Avenue North to investigate a report of a robbery and vehicle accident. Upon arrival, officers learned of an accident involving a motorcycle and Camaro. Officers also learned that the driver of the Camaro was assaulted by a suspect traveling in a second vehicle at the scene. After assaulting the driver of the Camaro, the suspect left the scene in the Camaro followed by the suspect’s vehicle. As the victim lie in the roadway, he was struck by a vehicle driven by an off duty BPD officer.

The victim, 40-year-old Jerand Deon Jackson of Center Point, Alabama was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the motorcycle was transported to UAB hospital for treatment. The Camaro was later located in the 300 block of 66th Street in Fairfield.
