WEDOWEE, Ala. (WIAT) — A Randolph County High School teacher turned himself in Wednesday after a weeklong investigation of a teacher reportedly having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old female student.

David Burkhalter, 30, is being held in the Randolph County Jail on eight felony counts, according to the District Attorney’s office.

The Wedowee Police Department along with the assistance of the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department initiated the investigation after receiving a report of the allegations a week ago on February 6. Investigators determined the accusations were credible and that probable cause existed for an arrest, authorities report.

Burkhalter’s charges include two counts of second-degree rape, second-degree sodomy, enticing a child, two counts of electronic soliciting of a child for sex, and two counts of school employee sex act with student less than 19 years of age. His bond is set at $1 million pending further charges, according to the District Attorney’s office.

This is the first complaint against the teacher, according to the Randolph County Schools Superintendent, John Jacobs. In addition, Burkhalter was a first year math teacher, football and basketball coach, Jacobs tells CBS 42. During the investigation, Burkhalter has been placed on administrative leave, Jacobs said.

Law enforcement is working alongside the Office of the District Attorney and the Randolph County School Board to ensure all appropriate steps are taken to ensure a thorough investigation and a successful prosecution of the matter.
