BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham police say an officer and a bystander are injured after a chase.
Birmingham Police Sgt. Shelton says officers spotted a vehicle matching the description of one used in a robbery around 5 p.m., attempted to stop the suspect vehicle, and confirmed that the driver of the vehicle was the suspect. The suspect then fled in the vehicle, and officers gave chase
The chase started around 3rd Ave W and ended by Legion Field when the suspect wrecked his vehicle and fled on foot. Shelton says the suspect hit a bystander’s vehicle, and the bystander was injured. The severity of their injuries is unknown, but they have been taken to a local hospital.
After the suspect fled from the scene of the collision, officers chased him on foot and arrested him. An officer was injured in the process of arresting the suspect; Shelton says the officer’s knee was injured and that it is minor.
‘We do take violent crime very seriously in our city as a police department, and we want the citizens to know that anytime a robbery does happen, we will look for the suspects to the best of our abilities,” Shelton said. “It is unfortunate in this situation that someone had to be involved in the way they were, and our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
The investigation is ongoing and Shelton says they will be pursuing charges.
