Police charge Birmingham man with Watson Avenue homicide

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Birmingham Police Department reports that a suspect has been arrested in connection with a homicide investigation.

Dennis Coleman, 48, of Birmingham was arrested Saturday and charged with capital murder in the death of Erick Hutchins, 44, of Birmingham.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:20 p.m. August 30 when officers from the department’s West Precinct responded to a report of a person who had been shot at an abandoned resident located at 5417 Watson Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers found Hutchins, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and lying unresponsive on the front porch. Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived along with the Jefferson County Coroner and pronounced Hutchins dead at the scene.

According to the BPD, Coleman allegedly shot Hutchins during a robbery. Coleman is being held at the Jefferson County Jail.
