Police: Car theft suspect arrested after pursuit


BESSEMER, Ala. (WIAT) — Police say a car chase ended in Wylam after a suspect stole a vehicle from a Waffle House in Bessemer.

The Bessemer Police Department received reports of the robbery on Thursday afternoon at 2:40 p.m. at the Waffle House on Academy Lane.

Officers learned that the suspect robbed the victim at gunpoint and fled the scene in her 2008 gold Chevy Malibu.

Police told WIAT 42 at the scene that the suspect could face a laundry list of charges from vehicle theft to attempted murder.

According to police, the suspect was driving erratically as police gave chase. Police said he ran several people off the road.

The suspect was taken into custody after police pursued him through Birmingham and Pleasant Grove. The chase ended in Wylam near Frisco St and 6th Ave

Officers found the victim on 20/59 near the mile 110 marker. They attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the stolen vehicle refused to stop. Officers pursued the vehicle through Hueytown, Pleasant Grove and were able to stop the vehicle in Birmingham. Multiple agencies assisted in the pursuit.

The suspect did cause a minor collision in Hueytown, but the driver was uninjured.

Officers arrested a black male juvenile following the pursuit. The suspect, 17, is being held at the Bessemer City Jail, pending his case being presented to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office for warrants.
