Murder under investigation at Center Point apartments

CENTER POINT, Ala. (WIAT) — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a murder at an apartment complex in Center Point. About a dozen police cars were on the scene investigating this homicide.

It happened at the Parkway Mirage apartment complex off of Polly Reed Road at Center Point Parkway. A 39-year-old man was found dead on the second floor balcony of an apartment.

A witness tells us that he heard about 5 or 6 loud gunshots shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday morning. He said it sounded like an assault rifle.

The witness we spoke to says the person who was killed was a friend of his. He lives on the second floor of the apartment complex.

Chief Deputy Randy Christian said it appears the victim was shot outside his apartment by more than one suspect. They believe the victim knew and was targeted by the suspects. The motive is unknown but they think it may be drug related.

Christian says the shooters fled in a black car and a white car, both of unknown make and model. The identity of the victim is being withheld until next of kin is notified.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 325-1450 or Crimestoppers at 254-7777.
