Man found dead in front yard of Center Point home identified; homicide investigation underway

CENTER POINT, Ala. (WIAT) — Sheriff’s Detectives are conducting a homicide investigation after a man was found lying dead in the front yard of a home.

Around 9:15 a.m. Thursday, Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence in the 1500 block of 2nd Place Northwest after the homeowner saw a man laying in the front yard. The responded and found the man unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at 9:32 a.m.

The sheriff’s office reports the body of the victim was transported to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office where a medical examination will determine the cause of death. 

Friday, the coroner identified the victim as 23-year-old Christopher James Burgay of Center Point. 

This investigation is ongoing. There is no word on any possible suspects at this time.

Neighbors tell CBS 42 they have seen suspicious activity and want to see more patrols driving through their neighborhood. 

“It kind of scared me what happened today. It’s kind of scary for the neighborhood because we truly have an active neighborhood watch so something like that happen, it’s a big deal ,” said neighbor Charlie Boykins. 

“I was terrified because this is a really nice neighborhood and my street is full of elderly people,” said Patricia Grays, neighbor. 

Mayor Tom Henderson with Center Point said they are putting more attention on this neighborhood and work closely with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

The Jefferson county sheriff’s office says they’ve added more resources in Center Point than any other area.
