Man barricades himself in home, SWAT team present

CENTER POINT, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE (2 p.m.): This morning’s standoff has been officially been classified as a hostage situation. The gunman is held in the Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham, the sheriff’s office reports.


(9 a.m.): The standoff is over. The suspect has been taken into custody. He has minor bruises and abrasions. Charges are pending.

Other people that were inside the home are being interviewed.

(7 a.m.): Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has released the following on Twitter:


(6 a.m.): According to Deputy James Perry of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, a man has barricaded himself inside a house on Reed Road. The man refused to come out the house claiming that he will “shoot the place up.” The situation started around 3 a.m.

There is no motive at this time.

There was a woman in the house but she managed to leave the building and notified the police. SWAT and Jefferson County deputies are on the scene.

Police request people to stay in their homes and out of the area at this time until the situation is resolved.
