LEEDS, Ala. (WIAT) — According to Leeds Police Chief Atkinson, police received a call from Children’s Hospital about a 2-year-old child with brain damage and a brain hemorrhage. Children’s Hospital believed the child had been shaken violently and had a small chance for survival. Further investigation showed that the child had been abused before which was indicated by other bruises on its body. The child died on April 24.
Jason Daniel Sparks, 24, of Leeds had taken the child to the Children’s Hospital. Sparks was given custody of the child from the child’s mother in January 2019. Sparks and his wife had volunteered to care for the child.
After police interviewed doctors and other hospital officials, it was determined the child was violently shaken. Police interviewed Sparks and he did not admit to anything. After speaking with the Jefferson County District Attorney, a warrant for Aggravated Assault and Murder was placed for Sparks.
Sparks’ wife was not at home at the time of the incident. It is reported that Sparks called his wife and told her that the child would not eat and was unconscious. Sparks started to bathe the child and discovered that it began to bleed, which prompted Sparks to take the child to the hospital.
Sparks is set with a $130,000 bond and is currently in Jefferson County Jail.
