BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham Police conducted a manhunt Tuesday night after a carjacking attempt left one dead and another injured.

According to Officer Truman Fitzgerald, officers responded to reports of a person shot at the Springville Landing Apartments at around 8 p.m. When they arrived, they discovered a male victim just outside of the apartment building who was transported to UAB hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Officers also discovered a second male gunshot victim who was laying in a grassy area a couple of yards away. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the man as 20-year-old Patrick Bennett, of Odenville.

The preliminary investigation suggests that a man was targeted in an attempted carjacking by a group of suspects. During the encounter, the man was shot and “returned fire” at the group, killing one of the suspects at the scene. The rest of the group then ran from the scene of the crime.

At around 8:25 p.m., the man’s vehicle was found near 9th Avenue West. When officers approached, a suspect fled from the car on foot. BPD then began searching in the Smithfield area with K-9 units deployed.

As of 6:00 a.m. Thursday morning, no suspects are in custody.
