BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE (6/10): According to Sgt. Williams of the Birmingham Police Department, the victim’s injuries of this morning’s shooting are non-life-threatening. There are still no suspects in custody, but police are looking for potentially three different people related to this incident.
Gloria Cook has lived in the North East Lake community for 30 years. She serves as the vice president of the neighborhood and tells CBS 42 that the area has changed drastically since she first moved in.
“This used to be a very nice neighborhood. Very nice,” said Cook. “The streets were clean, we didn’t have to worry about anybody breaking in anybody’s houses around here.”
The problems have escalated in recent years, and it’s not uncommon for Cook to hear gunshots a few times a week.
“It’s like a war zone,” explained Cook. “We get out the bed and get on the floor [when we hear gunshots] because [of] the way the windows are. A bullet don’t (sic.) have a name on it.”
That’s why Cook wasn’t surprised to learn about the shooting early Monday morning. Cook tells CBS 42 that she’s fed up with the violence, and is hopeful that change will come.
“It’s beginning to be a nuisance on this street right now,” said Cook. “We would like to see things change here, turn around, be better and have the Police patrol this area more.”
Sgt. Johnny Williams with Birmingham Police tells CBS 42 that neighbors should reach out to law enforcement if they are having issues in their community, and they will do what they can to heighten patrols.
Williams also adds that residents can do several things to protect their home from intruders as well such as install home security systems and ensure their entire property is well lit.
This is a developing story. CBS 42 will have more information on the investigation as it is released.
Original: There was a shooting on 7800 Block of 6th Avenue North in Birmingham. CBS 42 has confirmed that the shooting was a home invasion, and the homeowner was shot. There is no suspect at this time.
